In 1992, while working on a book about the design and construction of Foster + Partners’ Century Tower in Tokyo, the client for that project, Kazuo Akao, asked me to photograph and produce a book about the house Foster + Partners were designing for him on the Izu peninsula south of Tokyo. The seasonal changes hold a special significance in Japanese culture and I suggested photographing the house over a full year, an idea which the client enthusiastically endorsed, and this book is the result.
Gift giving when visiting a new house for the first time is an important aspect of Japanese life, a tradition reciprocated by the host, and this book was produced precisely for that purpose, in a strictly private, limited edition of just 200 copies. The book has never been made public, but a very few ‘mint-condition’ examples of the book from the publisher’s private collection are now available, offered on a first come first served basis.
